Students Explore Real-World Careers and Financial Literacy Through Experiential Learning

Students from Oakland Schools Technical Campus Northeast (OSTC-NE) recently gained invaluable exposure to real-world career pathways and financial literacy through two immersive, hands-on learning experiences.

As part of their career and technical education, students in the Entrepreneurship and Advanced Marketing program toured Amazon’s Fulfillment Center in Pontiac to gain a firsthand look at global logistics in action. The visit provided students with a behind-the-scenes look at how technology, efficiency, and teamwork drive one of the world’s most extensive distribution operations. By observing package sorting systems and learning how orders move from warehouse shelves to customers’ doorsteps, students gained a deeper understanding of supply chain management and the career possibilities within the logistics sector.

Shortly after the Amazon visit, students from multiple OSTC-NE programs, including Computer Programming, Health Sciences, Construction Technology, and Automotive Technology, participated in the annual Financial Reality Fair, in partnership with Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union (MSGCU). The fair simulated adult financial decision-making, guiding students through monthly budgeting scenarios based on assigned careers and salaries.

Students interacted with booths representing various essential expenses, including housing, food, insurance, transportation, and entertainment. “Surprise cards” introduced unexpected life events, such as a medical emergency or car repair, emphasizing the importance of saving and planning for the unknown. Financial professionals and volunteers were on hand to provide support, answer questions, and reinforce key money management strategies.

“Financial literacy is a life skill, and events like this help students make the connection between what they’re learning in class and what they’ll face in adulthood,” said Mrs. Diehl, OSTC-NE Entrepreneurship and Advanced Marketing instructor.

Together, these two events offered students powerful, real-world learning opportunities, strengthening their understanding of both career operations and personal financial responsibility. The experiences underscored OSTC-NE’s commitment to preparing students not only with technical skills but also with the life skills needed to thrive in work and beyond.
