Five students from the Agriscience and Environmental Technologies program at Oakland Schools Technical Campus Northwest earned first place at the Southeast regional Michigan Envirothon competition held March 12, 2026, at Fish Lake Nature Center.

Malia Matousek, Darrin Steir, Joel Medema, Michael Antoniou, and Dylan Kimmerer demonstrated strong teamwork and knowledge across several environmental science categories, including aquatic ecology, soils, forestry, wildlife, and renewable energy. Their performance secured the team’s first-place finish in the regional competition.

As regional champions, the students will advance to the state finals at Northern Michigan University in mid-May, where they will compete against top teams from across Michigan for the opportunity to represent the state at the national level.

Instructor Joel Berry said the students’ success reflects their dedication, hard work, and commitment to environmental stewardship, and demonstrates their academic preparation and passion for solving real-world environmental challenges.
