Energy Field Trip to IBEW Local Training Center

Students in the Energy-Electrical Technology program from both the Northwest and Southeast campuses recently participated in a distance learning experience at the IBEW Local Training Center.

During the visit, students gained insight surrounding three apprenticeship career paths, Inside Wiremen, Sound & Communications Installer/Technician, and Residential Electrical.

According to the training center’s website, the organization’s social mission is solely focused on producing the most experienced, skilled and productive electricians in the world.

The facility is privately funded through a partnership between the National Electrical Contractors Association of Southeastern Michigan and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 58.

Their 50,000-square-foot facility contains both a PV Array and a Wind Turbine. These systems are primarily used as training tools, so the two power sources were designed to supply power differently. The PV array is utility-interactive while the wind turbine is stand-alone and includes a battery bank. These systems demonstrate that renewable energy technologies, especially solar, are possible in areas that are not traditionally associated with high solar resources.

They provide apprenticeship and continuing education for electrical contractors and journeymen electricians. They pride themselves on educating the best Electricians and Contractors in the World for over 100 years right here in Southeastern Michigan. Additionally, many of their world-class instructors are recognized nationally as leaders in their field.
