Food Truck Rally Brings Cross-Program Collaboration to Life at OSTC-NW
Mark Edwards

Learning took on wheels at Oakland Schools Technical Campus Northwest as students participated in the annual Food Truck Rally cross-programming project.

The hands-on collaboration brought together students from multiple programs to design, build, market, and operate original food truck concepts. What began as a classroom project evolved into a campus-wide event that reflected real-world business operations and the strength of career and technical education.

Culinary students developed menus, calculated food costs, and prepared dishes under live service conditions. Entrepreneurship and Advanced Marketing students created brand identities, designed promotional materials and implemented social media strategies to generate interest. They also tracked budgets, monitored sales, and coordinated customer voting.

Students in Collision Repair and Construction Technology supported equipment setup and logistics, ensuring efficient operations. Graphics students contributed to truck and booth layout designs, reinforcing brand consistency across concepts.

The event created an atmosphere of energy, teamwork, and entrepreneurial spirit across campus.

Beyond food preparation and marketing strategy, the rally emphasized essential employability skills, including communication, time management, adaptability, and problem-solving. Students responded to customer feedback in real time, adjusted production levels, and experienced firsthand the challenges and rewards of operating a small business.

The project reflects the mission of OSTC Northwest to prepare students for both graduation and meaningful careers. By encouraging collaboration across programs, students gain a deeper understanding of how technical skills intersect across industries.

Campus leaders praised the professionalism and creativity demonstrated throughout the event, describing the Food Truck Rally as authentic learning in action.
