Students from the Oakland Schools Technical Campus–Northwest Engineering, Robotics, and Mechatronics (ERM) program earned top recognition while competing at Michigan State University’s College of Engineering Design Day on Dec. 5.

OSTC-NW was one of only four high schools statewide invited to participate in the prestigious event, which brought students to MSU’s East Lansing campus for a day of collaboration with engineering faculty, hands-on exploration of advanced laboratories, and participation in rigorous design challenges.

Under the guidance of ERM instructor Chuck Beyer, OSTC-NW students competed in multiple events. They won two of the three major competitions, including the K’NEX Bridge Challenge and the Electrical Engineering Challenge. The challenges required students to apply engineering principles, think critically under time constraints, and work collaboratively to design, build, and test functional solutions.

The students’ success highlighted their strong technical skills, creativity, and ability to problem-solve in a high-level academic environment alongside peers from across the state.

Participation in MSU’s College of Engineering Design Day provided students with valuable exposure to postsecondary engineering pathways while reinforcing the real-world applications of the skills they develop daily in the OSTC-NW ERM program.
