Culinary and Hospitality Students Learn from Industry Professionals at Townsend Hotel

Oakland Schools Technical Campus Southeast Culinary and Hospitality students gained hands-on industry experience during a special field trip to the Townsend Hotel on May 4.

The experience was made possible through a collaboration between Oakland County Michigan Works! and the Townsend Hotel. Instructor technician Julia Bartlett brought six junior Culinary and Hospitality students who will return to the program next year for both morning and afternoon sessions.

During the visit, students toured the hotel’s culinary and pastry kitchens and participated in a hands-on cupcake decorating activity. Students also connected directly with industry professionals, including Executive Chef Trevor, Restaurant Chef John and Tournant Chef Larry, who shared career experiences and professional guidance.

Students additionally met with Human Resources Director Susan Gilbert and Manager Bailee Gierman to learn about the Townsend Hotel’s newly launched culinary apprenticeship program, which has been in development for nearly two years.

The 18-month paid apprenticeship combines structured kitchen training with 144 hours of classroom instruction through a partnership with Oakland Community College. The program is designed to prepare future culinary professionals through real-world experience and advanced culinary education.
