Energy Career Path - Tree Trimming Demonstration
Energy-Electrical Technology students from OSTC-SE and OSTC-NW had the opportunity to participate in a Line Clearance Tree Trimming experience in collaboration with industry partner DTE on April 24th and 25th. Oakland Schools staff and DTE worked together to provide students with valuable insights into this career field. On the first day, students received important safety instructions and learned about the procedures involved in tree trimming. The second day allowed them to gain firsthand experience of the tasks and responsibilities associated with this profession.
According to instructor Tom Randazzo, Line Clearance Tree Trimming is a significant initiative undertaken by DTE to minimize power outages caused by fallen tree limbs. It serves as a two-year apprenticeship program offered by IBEW Local 17. This position is often regarded as an entry-level opportunity that can lead to various lucrative skilled trades jobs within Local 17. While tree trimming may be seen as an excellent way to make a living, it also provides valuable experience and potential pathways for career growth.
