OSTC-Southeast Construction Students Build Doghouses for Local Rescues
Mark Edwards

Oakland Schools Technical Campus Southeast Construction Technology students started the school year building skills, safety awareness, and a better future for man’s best friend.

After beginning their coursework with safety training and lessons in measurement, the combined morning and afternoon Construction classes took on a unique community service project: building 25 doghouses for local animal rescues.

Each doghouse is donated to rescue organizations that work with families to ensure outdoor dogs have access to warm, safe shelter during Michigan’s colder months. When a rescue learns of a need, volunteers reach out to the homeowner for permission to install one of the student-built shelters on their property.

Under the guidance of instructors Jeff Bowman and Steve Homrich, students not only completed the builds but also added their own personal touches, showcasing creativity, craftsmanship, and care.

The doghouses were constructed throughout September and October on the Southeast Campus, combining classroom learning with hands-on experience in design, framing, and finishing.
